When we get down to 0 to 10 degrees here, its not too bad until the wind tries to kill you. But usually that happens about once a year for less than a week. So I really don't have a lot of experience with it being that cold. We supplement with space heaters.
Windchills in the -40's? That's too damn cold. We generally just stock up on food but I'm not sure our heat pump can even warm the house when its that cold. Do you get extra heaters? If you have a wood stove do you try to warm just a few rooms? Kill a horse and sleep inside it until it's over?
