when my wife went to the 'specialty' liquor store to get the EverClear (alcohol), a guy working there saw her searching the labels and approached her and asked, "Are you making Limoncello"... he asked because 190 proof is the ideal EverClear... 151 the best they carry, and all they had was 120. Point is: So many people are making it themselves now that this particular store sold out of the EverClear preferred for Limoncello long before Christmas.
When I was a kid.. until about the age of 25, Limoncello was common in all my "Italian" relative's homes. My home as well... although my Dad didn't make it himself but instead got it from his older sister, (she was 30 years older than him). And then... it just 'disappeared'. No one made it anymore. Or at least made it VERY seldom.
Limoncello is experiencing a rebirth, if you will. Same as "Torts", in my family. Or as we called them "grass pies". I have a cousin who had the original recipe and about 10 years ago decided to begin the tradition again - so every Thanksgiving season she bakes about 20 of them and gives them to family members. Funny thing about 'grass pie'...
I think you HAD to have grown up with them to like them. I say that because I don't know a single person outside of my family, (who ate them as a kid), that likes them... and in fact... 'hates them'.
