Two years ago when I was going through chemo during the holidays, I was so weak that preparing Thanksgiving dinner just wasn't going to happen. We didn't even put up a Christmas tree that year. My daughter and her husband hosted Thanksgiving dinner that year because they knew I couldn't so we ate at her house. But there are some in-laws dynamics going on that helped us decide we'd never do that again. So we decided that from then on, Frank and I would do our thing at Thanksgiving, and everybody else could do theirs. We still host Christmas dinner for my kids and I prepare all the traditional holiday food, but we just don't do it at Thanksgving anymore.
Now Frank and I keep it casual and have nibbly food at Thanksgiving while we watch football all day. We did it last year and really enjoyed it. This year we're having fried chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, hot dogs, super nachos, and chili. My adult son is single and doesn't cook a lick so we told him he can come over and eat with us if he wants to. I made way more food than Frank and I can eat. My son works nights so he might show up and he might not. It's cool with us either way. My married daughter was going to spend Thanksgiving with her husband's family but she face-timed with me this morning and her little boy is sick with a cold and pink eye so they're staying home. I asked what they're going to do about dinner and she said they were going to try to order in some Chinese food and watch movies. Sometimes, you just gotta go with the flow.
It's not what's on the menu that's the most important thing. No matter what you're having, just enjoy spending time with those you love and count your blessings! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!
