Actually every winter we'll have a day, or two, that drop below freezing. More than a few days of freezing weather, however, is very rare.
I know that this sounds positively balmy for some... like Guard, Iowa... where they routinely get down to 0, or less, HOWEVER... and 21Dog will back me up on this...
Although not that common today we used to get fog that could linger for a month... and I'm talking pea soup fog.. thick, can't even see the road if you happen to be driving. Going to an outdoor event, like a football game, and sitting in the fog... EVEN IF it's in the 50's, could the be coldest thing you'll ever experience.
I used to be an avid skier... and I skied in driving snow storms where the temp was in the teens, even less on a few ski trips... and that was NOTHING, as far as being cold, compared to sitting in a the wet fog during a football game when it was in the high 40's or 50's.
