RAMbeau and I saw Dunkirk earlier this year and we felt the same way. Other than the magnificent air battles, there was no character development or much story to follow. It was not worthy of being nominated for a "Best Picture" Academy Award in my book. For me, Saving Private Ryan is the war movie measuring stick and Dunkirk just didn't live up to it.
