took place just a very few months ago, Mama. My oldest grandson was sitting in my living room with headphones on when he began quietly singing along to a song he was listening too... I heard him singing... "Luck be a lady tonight....".....
My oldest grandson is a typical 'teen'.... he's listened to some of my music, liked some of it... .but mostly I knew none of the artists and songs he listened too. So when I heard him singing this song I had to tap him and ask... "Are you listening to Frank Sinatra?"
Turns out he had a large collection of Frank's music and, in fact, Frank was his favorite artist. He had a huge collection of his songs and knew the lyrics to all of them. I was stunned.... I had no idea.
Since then he and I annoy the living hell out of everyone else if they're in a car with us as he and I go thru Sinatra after Sinatra tune singing along.
I'm with you, Mama... and had a somewhat similar upbringing... My Mom loved all those old classics. My Dad, no... he was too busy farming for music. I first noticed my Mom's love of music when I was VERY young... she would be doing the dishes and singing her favorite songs... solo, that is without the music playing on the radio or on record player. She had a great voice but was shy about it. She had many favorites, Mathis perhaps at the top of her list.
I began band in the 4th grade... I began playing music I had heard her singing when she thought no one could hear. All those you mentioned.. and all the others.
In 1998 when my Mom was diagnosed with cancer... she passed away just 3 months after being diagnosed... I had to administer her home chemo treatment.... I think it was every other night, or so.... each time I'd bring over my collection of old classics and she and I would sing along... it was the first time in her life that she 'came out' and openly sang in front of another person. In those 3 months we went thru nearly all of the classics. I used to be able to sing 'somewhat' well... but my Mom was fantastic... a secret she kept to herself nearly her entire life. - JamesJM
