I dunno, Waterfield... I think you have a dark side. 
But you also have a good point. If a book doesn't come off the page and grab me quickly.... chances are good I'll never finish it.
The WORST opening mistake an author can make, for me of course, is to introduce 20 characters in the span of a few pages... then assume you know them all.
