Back in the early 60's my uncle bought a prime piece of real estate. Point Sal.... it's just west of Santa Maria, Ca. The property included a mile long stretch of beach... sealed completely off from access except for the very intrepid and willing to trespass. It was our hunting club.
There was an old cabin on the property, long fallen into disrepair. No roof to speak of, gaping holes in the floor... no power, no water. We loved it... and were used to such accommodations because of other hunting properties we had leased in the previous years.
There were a couple of outbuildings but no longer standing... only piles of lumber and tin.
Me and a friend who found such antiquities fascinated explored the ruins. Everything we found, that we could 'date', was from the early to late 40's. Magazines and such. I got curious so did some research.
It was a coastal lookout station, one of many all along the western coast of the USA, manned to watch for a Japanese invasion. Some manned by military, some by civilians. Ours at Point Sal was manned by the military.
It was a treasure trove of 40's artifacts. Magazines, as I mentioned... but also old K-Rations, military gear, books, clothing, etc.
