as you know I'm VERY into the Civil War... the movie "Gettysburg"... was truly POORLY made. Embarrassing, actually, some of the concocted scenes were horrific... BUT...
Some of the acting is actually QUITE good. Most specifically, (NOT entirely), I refer to Richard Jordan playing the part of Lo Armistead. The scene in which he details his relationship with Hancock, (opposing side of the war), is truly remarkable. Beringer's counter point is poor.. NOT his entire performance, but in this case very poor... but Jordan is ON IT.
I honestly think George C. Scott's performance in Patton one of the very best acting performances of all time.. WAR themed not.
So anyway... specific 'scenes'... war movie scenes that is: And I'll keep it to WWII.... Curt Jürgens in "The Enemy Below"... hard to come up with a specific scene because he was remarkable throughout... but the scene with him and "Heini", (the character). is extraordinary.
Acting is a great part of it. I don't know Civil War movies that well. I haven't seen a lot of them. In terms of my stuff, I also liked the mini-series, The Pacific. It was hard to watch but worth it I thought. Patton I agree with. There's Saving Private Ryan of course. Letters from Iwo Jima was brilliantly done I thought. I actually didn't like Dunkirk that much for some reason though it was clearly well done. I don't really consider Schindler's List or The Pianist "the military at war films" per se but they are great films about that world.
Just improvising from memory. Other eras, I liked Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans, even though Daniel Day Lewis as great as he usually is just did not fit the role the way he played it. If you see the long version, Kingdom of Heaven is actually surprisingly good, even with Orlando Bloom. Master and Commander is not consistent but it excels at conveying life at sea in that era. Lawrence of Arabia.
("We have taken Aqaba." "Taken Aqaba? Who has?" "We have. Our side in this war has. The wogs have. We have. He likes your lemonade." ) Apocalypse Now was too over the top and misguided for me even when I was young. I didn't like Braveheart for lots of different reasons either.
Some well-known scenes (one of which actually shows the effects of grapeshot) and maybe an obscure one
