Here's the situation: My grandson, (2nd oldest), was/is the QB for the JV Football team.. he's going to be a sophomore. The question is: Move up to Varsity?

Our starting QB is being recruited by several Div. I colleges so this summer he's touring the USA, visiting the campuses... which means he won't be here this summer for Passing League. As some of you know.. "Passing League" is now a HUGE thing and a season unto itself. Very competitive. Since our starting QB will be gone my grandson is taking his place... probably every Passing League tournament this summer.

Obviously my grandson will NOT be vying for the starting QB position come this falls football season. So far so good. Gavin will get some good experience.

They want Gavin to 'move up' to Varsity for this coming year. Mostly as a Defensive Back. Backup QB sure, but he'll only see action at QB, on the Varsity, if our starting QB is injured, and injured badly. He won't come into a game unless there are seconds to go and we're up by 3 plus TD's. He would play at DB but very unlikely as a 'starter'. (he has little experience at DB even though he plays the position pretty well, not great).

If he stays down on the JV's he's the starting QB.

Several people I have talked to about this say something like, "If you have the chance to move up to Varsity you DO it. 3 year Varsity play is good for your resume".

So ok... he last played football in Nov. 2016. He'll play all this summer in passing league. Should he play Varsity he will not play QB in a game this year. Meaning... (as you've deduced), from Nov. 2016 until late Aug. 2018 he will not have played a single football game at QB IF he moves up to Varsity.... only 'passing league games'.. and that ain't nearly the same.

I'm not seeing it. I suppose I see some worth in moving up to Varsity but not in helping him at the QB position and in fact I think hurting him. That's a long time to go without playing QB.

My grandson will probably move 'up' if asked, and he's been asked but not officially. It's his choice. Status.... he'll do it because he's young and it's a status symbol to 'move up' your sophomore year.

I say, "Stay a JV... better for your game, being a 3 year Varsity player is nothing but bragging material and has no benefit to you as far as elevating your game".

Thoughts? I'm asking because... I seem to be in the minority on this when asking friends. - JamesJM
