That would be one of my fears, too, sst. When we went on cruises, they were always in January so there was a risk of bad weather here in St Louis. We always scheduled a flight to arrive in Miami the day before the cruise departed to give ourselves a little wiggle room. 'Course back then, flights were a lot more on time than they are today so we never had a problem. Once at the end of a week-long cruise and the ship had docked back in Miami, we found out that our return flight to St Louis had been grounded due to icy conditions in St Louis. We returned to the hotel where we stayed before the cruise to spend another night and by the next day, the weather was good enough to fly home. That wasn't the airlines fault, though. However, it was the only time that our flights didn't leave or arrive per the schedule.
I would have a cow if I missed my cruise due to flight delays. And you're right... these days it's become a "normal" part of air travel and passengers can't do much more than suck it up. Also, you're so right that there are no more direct flights. When my dad died in 2013, I thought about flying from St Louis to Wichita for the funeral. There used to be flights between the two cities because I used to fly between the two when I worked for Southwestern Bell in Wichita but used to fly to St Louis for conferences and workshops. Anyhow.... I checked high and low and there are no more direct flights .There are layovers no matter where you're going, it seems. I checked and found out that I'd have had to travel west and cross two states (Missouri & Kansas which is stupid since Kansas was my destination), land in Denver, Colorado, board a plane there and then come back east into Kansas in order to arrive in Wichita. How nuts is that? I thought about even taking a train. There was a train departing from St Louis alright, but but there was no train stop in Wichita. The closest I could get was a train stop in Newton, Kansas which is about 30 mi. outside of Wichita. I finally just drove from St Louis to Wichita but I'm getting too old to drive any more than a couple of hours now so a long trip in the car is not something I'll ever do again.
Like I said earlier, we're done travelling. It just feels like too much of a hassle these days.
