In WWII it was an Army Air Corp Base with a rather large POW camp. My Dad became friends with a few of the POWs. He even had a wooden airplane that a German POW carved by hand with a pocket knife. Dad said there were about 7-8 Submariners who rowed to shore at Myrtle Beach and were caught so easily, it was assumed they wanted to be caught. Many of the POWS had no intention of going back to Germany because it was so devastated after the war. Dad did hear that a couple of hard line POWS killed themselves when they got word that Hitler was dead.
