I have a hard time understanding prison sentences..

So, on one episode of Foremsic Files, a dude kills his wife and cuts her up into pieces small enough that he could flush them down his toilet.. so, he cut her up into pretty small pieces.. he was found guilty and received 12 years in prison..(!)

I was called in for jury duty on a case here, but wasn't selected for the jury.. a local guy touch a 12 year old girl three time inappropriately on top of her clothes.. meaning she had all her clothes on and he briefly touched her in her privates on top of her clothes..

He was given THREE life sentences, one for each offense.. now, don't get me wrong, what he did was horrific and definitely deserved punishment, but I couldn't believe he got 3 life sentences for it.. especially when I think of the other dude getting 12 years for slicing his wife into Itty bitty bits and flushing her down the toilet..
