When you have college coaches demanding salaries well over a million dollars colleges and universities need to turn to revenue machines. Of course that is television exposure. For West coast schools its hard to compete with schools in the midwest and south because of the time difference. There simply is less tv exposure for commercials to sell products. Hence the expanding Big Ten Conference with west coast schools.
Unfortunately, I think football on a college level for large universities is in real danger. I would not be surprised to see Stanford discontinue football and others will follow.
So I'm not so sure its "management" that's at fault. I think it's the need for money.
