Best way to see the strides made in water animation, just watch part of the action sequences in The Perfect Storm.. Although done very well at the time, they certainly don't hold up to current standards.. and, if you've ever seen the making of TPS, they filmed most of the boat scenes in an actual boat on a swivel with TONS of water being pumped on it.. so a nice mixture of real footage and layered in CGI..
