I flew from DFW to Monroe LA with a pocket knife and wasn't stopped, and yes it was put in the tray with my keys, watch, pen to pass thru a metal detector. On the return flight that afternoon I was told my pocket knife wasn't allowed on board. So I had my checked bag returned and put it in.
About 30 years ago I've a dog sit at a carry on bag when we returned from Italy thru NY. My daughter was standing with it while the rest of the family was getting bags ,she was 13 . I immediately told them it was mine, lady asked me if any fruit or vegetables was in it. It had held some fruit we ate before boarding and I showed her the bag didn't have anything and no trip to jail as a fruit smuggler.
