back in the day.. Something most people don't know about, is that labels, when signing artists, wanted the artists to be free to tour non-stop in promotion of their LPs.. So, they would sit the bands down and everyone in the band would write out what they owed money on: houses, cars, equipment, prostitutes, credit cards.. ANYTHING they owed money on.. The label would total up the band debts and cut the band a check to pay off ALL their debts so they would be free to tour..
Problem was, the label made the bands pay them back for the loan.. and the loans came at extremely high interest rates.. remember the song "16 Tons" and what it was about? What labels were doing to their artists was a more modern version of what the company stores were doing to their employees..
