They can get mold or black junk behind the front door rubber seal..

and that can really smell bad.. After a washing, we always just leave the door open for a couple of hours to help dry it out.. Then every now and then will take a rag and clean that nasty crap from the rubber seal.. that and cleaning out the bottom trap/filter has always kept us in business with our front load, which is probably 13-14 years old, or so.. but when its time to replace it, we'll go back to a top load..
