About 15 yrs ago I was on a collision course to the Sacramento Reef off the Pacific side of Baja and where the mysterious sinking of the enormous Goodwill sailboat sank after striking the reef. Mysterious because not on crewmember was ever found and all kind of stories still exist as to their fate. The reef is huge and very dangerous because it is shallow and normally not visible due to weather-especially fog. There were 8 of us and we were headed south to the tip of Baja when we could hear the waves crashing over the reef. Like idiots we decided to anchor off the reef and take tanks and move in with a dingy as close as possible for a dive to see if we could get some portholes (totally illegal of course). Most of my friends ended up with perfectly shaped portholes and I ended up with one all bent out of shape. It's still in my back yard totally rusted. So what can I do with it ? How do I tell whether its brass or copper or ? How can I get the rust off and is it worth it ? We did confirm that indeed it was the Goodwill we were diving on and that we were extremely lucky to have been there on a day where you could safely dive it.
