When he put in a pool for us back in...... '64 I think... we told him he had to learn because it was dangerous for him to be cleaning the pool. If he slipped an fell in he could drown. My Dad disagreed... he said falling in would be no problem... he'd simply sink to the bottom and walk out. 
We never were able to convince him that his plan wasn't possible, and he never learned to swim.
I cannot remember learning to swim but I know how and where.... canal near my home. But no, it wasn't "John Wayne" style where he just tossed you in and said 'get out'....my Mom taught me.
My kids, and grandkids, all began as infants. Under 1. I was against that when my wife suggested it BUT... it works. - JamesJM
