Looking at the replay from the article in super slow motion it looks like #22 on the Bucs would have made first contact with Kupp at the 15 yard line if Kupp continued up the sideline. That would have been 2 yards short of the first down, but with #22 running perpendicular across the field could Kupp have carried him the necessary 2 yards? I dunno, but I would have like to have seen him try.
The better option (in hindsight and at super slow motion) might have been to turn up field and then cut back behind Skow, who would have possibly been in position to take #22 out of the play. Kupp might not have made the first down then, either, but he certainly would have stayed in bounds and worst case scenario would have left the Rams with a yard or two on 3rd down.
