I'll ask 53.
he and Scott would change places. And to this day I cannot figure out
what they were doing.
There are a few ways to play safeties
most people know strong and free safeties
the strong is often in the box, and free is more
of a cover guy, but can blitz.
Then you can play left and right
meaning both will play both strong and free
depending on the offensive formation
There is no strong and no free, they both play both
Then you can have a safety to the wide side of the field
and one that is always on the short side.
So, with Weddle in the secondary, they tricked teams
they still played match zone but rather than show
the same thing every time, they'd show the corners
the same and the safeties different.
It made it harder for QBs to process.
plus Weddle was so smart, he may have freelanced
some...making a play that a less experienced player
didn't see.
And in the 49ers games Rams ran more Cover-3
in run looks, a safety deep and one shallow
rather than rotating to Cover-3 when they
ran it. It was still Cover-3 maybe even a little
Cover-1, but they didn't rotate to it, they showed
it. Again, maybe just using Weddle on either side
up or back...window dressing
Here he lines up with all the other DBs, but
he got nosey, took off toward the line
here he is up a couple of yards, so the "shell"
looks different
but after the snap he gets back 2 yards where
a Rams safety will usually be
Against 49ers- Rams played more Cover-3 zone
against them when they had a fullback, less
They would show it presnap rather than post snap
little things...
Also in playoffs--A'Rob was a monster. Miller
went from very good to great.
Jones was healthy. Jones on the field more--he's a playmaker, was a help
Fuller going down and Scott stepping in . . . helped a lot.
Rams were more focused...hitting harder (Scott on Deebo) and playing
their responsibility (A-Rob was absent most of the year).
I I could ask Morris one question I would ask him what was up with the
safeties when Weddle was there.
Anyway, I could be wrong, but from what I saw, 49ers saw something
different than they saw on film and it caused slight hesitation in Jimmy G.
And he missed passes he hit during regular season...
