I take off the rose-colored glasses when it comes to Martz.
Trashing people? That's what he does. He did it with Warner, when he wasn't taking undue credit for Warner.
Vermiel was the 99 SB coach - many (including Martz, apparently) assume it was Martz. Martz took Vermiel's team and did well for a while with it, after trashing Vermiel to Team Pres. Shaw, who, at Martz' urging, got rid of him. The GSOT continued to unravel after the Patriots cheated their way to a stolen Super Bowl win.
Martz then proceeded to nealy ruin Warner, then trash and dump him, after which Warner had the Giants playing playoff-level ball until they lost two WRs and a guard. After those wheels fell off the QB position was handed to traded draftee Eli Manning who started the rest of the season and finished winless.
We know what happened when Warner went to Arizona. Martz, meanwhile, couldn't catch a break (or was it something else) as a head coach with other teams. As a quarterback whisperer his voice wasn't heard much. Scheme, aggressive offense planning, all of that, sure - but when it doesn't work he's lost. Refuses to adjust. Inflexible ego was his downfall.
Martz understands quarterback play, OK - but not so much as he advertises for himself. Who, besides Warner, made him look good? Bulger? I ain't buying. I saw no dramatic improvement in Bulger from the start of his time with the Rams until he left. And Kurt arrived with many of the talents that Martz may have polished a bit, but much of what Warner brought had origins elsewhere - and beyond that, there are certain things that Warner had that you cannot teach, but that you can, after the fact, take credit for. That's what I saw from Martz.
