What do they do for this type of thing in hockey? Is there a form precedent that the NFL can adopt or consider?

There was precedence for at least two court room trials for a NHL players that strike another player with a stick in Hockey.
One player fell and banged his head on the ice and went unconscious after being struck. Also, one player served a night in jail after dishing out the "assault".
A few really bad cases in the NHL but rarely do NFL players go to court against each other to my knowledge.
