I would conversely say that expectations were overblown. Not many late 3rd round picks (at any position) start week 1 of their rookie seasons. I think Bruss was going to be allowed to legitimately compete for the starting RG spot. But I think the fact that he was settling in as their 8th OL heading into week 1 was more realistic from the beginning. The injury is a shame not because he can't start right away but because he will miss the development that the rest of preseason, being a potential game day active all year, practicing, etc. would have afforded him. He might have ended up contributing the 2nd half of this season. Who knows.
Wishing him the best and that he is 100% for OTAs in 2023.
