Another beautiful day in Irvine today, high 70s without a cloud in the sky.
The pads went on today, albeit for the second half of practice only. I’ve never seen them change into pads mid-practice before.
Big crowd today, as you might expect. If you are ever going to Rams practice I learned an important tip a few years ago. There are 2 large fields separated by an area for the trainers, coaches, etc. The Rams always scrimmage on one of the fields and that’s where all the action occurs, but here’s the secret as to which field is the scrimmage field that day: there are always two large monitors in the middle area between the fields, and the monitors face the scrimmage field. A coach told me this once and it has never failed.
Here’s what I noticed at camp today. Elijah Garcia is a big dude with power and quickness. I hope we get to see a lot o him in preseason.
Garrett and Lewis subbed in for Hollins and Floyd in 1s v 1s drills. The other edges were on the other field. Lewis, Garrett, Floyd, and Hollins all had rushes that would have ended in sacks. Lewis also tipped a pass and nearly came down with it for a pick.
A lot of the time the first team O goes against the second team D, and vice versa. Most of these drills were a mismatch as you might imagine. Stafford carved up the second D’s secondary with precision passes to Kupp, Robinson, and Jefferson. There were a couple of glitches on deflections and some outstanding defensive plays by Durant and N. Scott, but for the most part Stafford feasted all day. On the other side, Wolford was only getting checkdowns against the first team D, but later in practice had some nice downfield throws to Harris and Atwell. He also found Hopkins about six times and really seemed to be looking for Brycen, who caught everything and made some impressive plays. The stars of the second team O were Harris, Atwell, and Hopkins for sure. On the other hand, no one ran on the first team D. Gaines, Robinson, Donald, Wagner, and Jones in the middle is just so formidable. With the Niners having some losses on their interior OL, I think we are going to be so much better prepared to handle their run game.
Hill and Long started at corner while Ramsey ran gassers on the sideline, but Roschelle took almost as many reps. That dude is the same size as Fuller and stands out in the cornerback group.
I liked the fact that when they went 1s versus 1s, it was very competitive and very even. The O would have one drive where they move down the field effortlessly, and then on the next drive the D stuffed them without a first down.
Overall, a fun practice with some big plays by first team O, second team O, first team D, and especially second team pass D.
Oh, and except for one deep ball that wasn’t there, every pass Stafford threw to Robinson was completed and for good yardage. They are going to be lethal!
