Actually AD's cap hits for the next 3 years total $76.5M, not $46M. (See screen shot from [
overthecap.com] below.)
However, if he were to retire today the Rams wouldn't have to pay his salary the next three years, nor would they have to pay the roster bonus in either 2023 or 2024. Since those payments wouldn't be made they wouldn't count against the cap. This erases $50M of that $76.5M cap hit. (Note: it doesn't matter that $5M of his 2022 salary is guaranteed. If he retires he forfeits that salary, too.)
The Rams could then go to arbitration to recoup the remaining $26.5M.
$5M is the result of a roster bonus that AD collected on the second day of this league year. I doubt that an arbitrator would allow him to keep that, and if AD has to return it the Rams get $5M added back to their cap space.
And the other $21.5M is attributed to prorated signing bonus money. According to [
russellstreetreport.com] the Rams can go to arbitration to recoup that money, too, and if they can show that they expected AD to play out the deal when they paid him these signing bonuses it it likely that he would have to repay the money ... and the Rams would get another $21.5M added back to their cap space.
