Can't say that I blame him. But a restructure doesn't mean taking less money - it means making the same money but having it paid out differently. And it's a win/win for the team and the player. (Asking a player to take less money is a renegotiation, not a restructure.)
The way I laid it out in Lawrence's case, the Cowboys would convert $17M of his $19M salary to a signing bonus. (Note that the remaining $2M would be his salary in 2022.)
The benefit to the Cowboys is obvious: $13.6M in cap space.
As for Lawrence, he gets $19M in 2022 either way. But if it's paid out as salary he gets $19M over the course of the season in 18 equal payments of just over a million dollars each.
With this hypothetical restructure he would get $17M when he signs the deal and then get the other $2M over the course of the season in 18 equal payments of $111,111.
That's the benefit to Lawrence: $17M in his pocket today instead of over the last 4 months of the year (without giving up a penny that he already negotiated).
