The Rams could give Stafford a 4 year, $180M extension (an average of $45M a year) and lower his 2022 cap hit at the same time, actually making it easier to sign free agents.
Stafford's cap hit in 2022 is $23M: $12.5M salary, $10M signing bonus, and $.5M workout bonus
The Rams could roll that $23M into a new deal and essentially make it 5 years, $203M starting with the 2022 season. That extends his deal by 4 years and adds $180M to his existing deal. Maybe give him a $50M signing bonus just so the math is easy?
2022 $2M salary (plus $10M prorated signing bonus = $12M cap hit)
2023 $31M salary (plus $10M prorated signing bonus = $41M cap hit)
2024 $36M salary (plus $10M prorated signing bonus = $46M cap hit)
2025 $40M salary (plus $10M prorated signing bonus = $50M cap hit)
2026 $44M salary (plus $10M prorated signing bonus = $54M cap hit)
Doing Stafford's extension like this would reduce his 2022 cap hit by $11M.
