The San Francisco 49ers are looking to ESPN to fill a vacancy on their coaching staff.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that Brian Griese, who most recently served as an analyst on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” will become quarterbacks coach for the 49ers. The move will reunite Griese with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who actually briefly coached Griese in 2004 and 2005.

Former Monday Night Football analyst Brian Griese is leaving ESPN to become the Quarterbacks Coach for the 49ers, sources tell @SethWickersham and me. Griese and Kyle Shanahan have known each other for years; Griese played QB in Tampa when Shanahan was on the Bucs coaching staff.

Griese has no coaching experience, but he can point to an 11-year playing career as evidence of his credentials. He replaces Rich Scangarello, who left the 49ers to become offensive coordinator at Kentucky.

Since retiring in 2009, Griese has worked for ESPN as an analyst on both college and NFL games, becoming one of the co-analysts on the network’s Monday night coverage in 2020. He was essentially out of a job after the network made its newest hire, so jumping into coaching makes a good deal of sense.
