It would be clueless if McVay and Donald weren't providing the clues. Their words matter. All we can do is speculate BECAUSE WE ARE NOT THEM.
The competitive nature is a good reason to continue. Their devotion to their teammates is the most compelling reason. Money and existing contracts are considerations. Then again, so is family and time. Wives tend to have some influence, no? McVay's father was cited by Sean himself as an example of why one might choose another path.
With that said, I fully expect both to be back next year. I just wouldn't call the possibility one could retire early as clueless. Chris Borland retired after one year for his own reasons, mainly the possibility of ending up like Junior Seau. Were there clues he would do that? Vermeil retired after winning the Super Bowl then returned with the Chiefs. What clues existed to predict that?
