I've written many times about meeting the players outside, so easy then. Then the move to Anaheim in '78. I hated it. But I was there... that was never in question. But I remember parking VERY early on my first trip to Anaheim and discovering those days of parking with the players were over. They parked in a fenced area. I remember the first Ram player I spotted in the parking lot... none other than Vince himself... but so distant from fence there was no contact. The days of meeting the players as they walked into the stadium, and out, were over. Things would never be the same again.
I had no idea, of course, of just how different things would become, as it is today. You want to meet a player today you have a better chance trying to run into one at McD's than at the stadium.
I remember many friends thinking I was out my mind to drive 4 hours to the games then 4 hours home afterward... but they didn't get. All the way there, on game days, I was tuned into KMPC, all Rams news.... then on the return trip home KMPC again, all the way home, all Ram's news.
I was young then, filled with vim and vigor. A day to a Ram's games took nothing out of me. Next morning, 4am, back at work. Today... the vim and vigor is gone... and a trip like that would require at least 24 hours for me to recover. BUT... the excitement, the enthusiasm? That hasn't dimmed, in fact it's stronger than ever. - JamesJM
