My guess is that is wasn't a split second decision. My guess is Gaines (and probably others on the defense) knew when they walked onto the field for that last defense stand that if the got a turnover they should just fall to the ground.

The big surprise to me isn't that Gaines knew that. It's that Howard didn't.
