My guess is that is wasn't a split second decision. My guess is Gaines (and probably others on the defense) knew when they walked onto the field for that last defense stand that if the got a turnover they should just fall to the ground.
The big surprise to me isn't that Gaines knew that. It's that Howard didn't.
It’s not as if Howard was being careless with the ball.
Maybe Gaines just got carried away with exuberance and fell on Howard out of sheer joy?
