The cap is going up from $182.5M to $208M, an increase of $25.5M.
And all the dead money for Goff ($24.7M) and Gurley ($8.4M) come off the books after this year. Another $33.1M.
So, yeah, the Rams' cap position improves by $58.6M from 2021 to 2022. But those 6 salaries I mentioned add over $73M to the cap, an net loss of around $14.4M in cap space from '21 to '22.
And not surprisingly, [
overthecap.com] says the Rams are currently $14.6M over the cap for 2022.
Expect several restructures and extensions in the offseason to create a lot of cap space, but not enough to keep everyone from this list that I would want to keep.
These are the Rams' FAs this year. Assuming the Rams can create around $40M in cap space, who do you really think the Rams can afford to keep?
Von Miller
Darious Williams
Sony Michel
Austin Corbett
Odell Beckham Jr.
Buddy Howell
Johnny Mundt
Donte Deayon
Joseph Noteboom
Jamil Demby
Coleman Shelton
Brian Allen
Travin Howard
Matt Gay
Juju Hughes
Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
J.J. Koski
Sebastian Joseph
John Wolford
Troy Reeder
Gonna be tricky, AlbaNY, that’s for sure.
You didn’t include the $12-13M savings if Whit retires which is very likely.
I think they find a way to keep Miller. That was probably baked in when they gave up the 2nd and 3rd for him and Miller certainly hasn’t disappointed.
DW is a goner. He played his way off this team.
Michel is very iffy. IMO, probably a goner. Rams can always draft inexpensive RB’s later.
I think, and hope, that they can extend Corbett reasonably.
OBJ is kinda iffy. Well, probably very iffy if they keep Woods, as expected.
They might keep Mundt IF he comes cheaply, otherwise Blanton gets the nod.
Boom is almost certain to be extended. They love him, so unless he’s unreasonable with his demands he’s a keeper.
Allen is iffy. Maybe 50-50. Gawd, I wish we had drafted Humphrey.
Didn’t know Howard was a UFA. If so, he’s iffy. If he’s restricted then he’s likely to stay.
Matt Gay is a no brainer. Pay the man.
The rest on your list are likely goners.
Now it looks a bit more manageable, doesn’t it?
If Stafford extends they can free up some more cap dollars and restructuring a few contracts will help even more.
Once again, Snead has to make shrewd and inexpensive outside FA decisions AND hit on some gems among his many late picks. So what’s new?
I’m at total peace with all this as of now pending the SB. If any FO can pull this off with a successful offseason it’s the Rams. They’ve kinda written the book on it in recent years.
