Is that you can hear this same sentiment from so many different places. From x players to x coaches to even people on this board who say the same thing. So how does Sean McVay keep having the same problem over and over again? And I'm not questioning his genius. I think he's an amazing offensive mind. I just don't understand how he always falls into this trap of insisting on long developing routes when his offensive line is getting murdered and then making some of the most dumbfounding choices at the wrong time in terms of play calling and strategy.
And that's what makes him a good coach, but not a great coach. I agree that he has an amazing offensive mind but I do question his genius. In fact, it's been a while since anyone in sports media has used that term to describe him. They used to, though. Hmmmmm......
I think where geniuses stumble is common sense. Not every situation needs a galaxy brained solution. Which is where McVay struggled against he 49ers. IMO, he deliberately tried to be practical and was going against his nature. Since it is so foreign to him, he didn't apply it in a timely fashion. As others pointed out, his overall approach was fine and had the Rams in good position. He just stayed with it too long and at he wrong times.
He is working to find that balance though and I think he's going to get it all figured out.
