I don't remember the exact year in SL, but Fischer fired or let go Josh McDaniels at end of season and he rejoined the Patriots for another superbowl run. He continues to this day as the OC. Why not bring in Vic Fangio now as a consultant and get ready for his D next year. I know many will talk about the chaos and friction with Morris, but he is one I would want running my D as DC in the future.
It was in January 2012. Spagnuolo had been fired as the head coach after the 2011 season and McDaniels had just finished year one of a 2-year contract with the Rams as the Offensive Coordinator. Fisher hadn't been hired yet. I don't think McDaniels ever wanted to be in St Louis working in the Rams organization. I'm not sure why he even took the job. I think he was itching pretty hard to be back with the Patriots. So, per Demoff, he and McDaniels had some private conversations following the 2011 season concerning his future. The Patriots were in the playoffs but they asked for permission to interview McDaniels and the Rams agreed. Two days later, he was back with the Patriots as an offensive assistant. Bill O'Brien was the Patriots offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at the time but he was a short-timer himself. O'Brien had just been hired to be the head coach at Penn State but he stayed on in his Patriots job through SuperBowl 46. When O'Brien left for his Penn State job, Josh McDaniels slid right back into his old OC job with the Patriots and he's been there ever since... except for that incident in 2018 where he accepted the job as head coach of the Colts only to change his mind a few hours later because he wanted to stay in his OC job with the Patriots. What a tool.
