I hear cliches like that a lot. Some actually make sense. That doesn't. If you play not to lose by definition you win.
Well, the last game doesn't really support that idea. Playing not to lose can and did lead to a huge momentum swing that the Rams couldn't take back. Holding on for dear life instead of staying aggressive often leads to what you were trying not to do.
It's more of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you play to win, you are thinking about winning. If you play not to lose, you're thinking about losing.
