The Post Martz implosion were dark days of gross organizational incompetence. Fisher gave the organization some semblance of order and direction though clearly the league had passed him by and he failed to adjust. The job was to big for him as he called the shots for the organization. He had the power and a young Snead had to try and get Fisher the type of players he wanted but Fisher had the last call on every important draft choice.
If you listen to the language between Snead and McVay versus Fisher and Snead you will see a stark contrast. Snead/McVay talk and you can tell they are of one mind. The organization is unified and works seamlessly and egos are not a problem.
With Fisher there were 2 organizations and Fisher was in charge of both. They inherited Sam Bradford who was often injured and never panned but wasted a few years figuring that out. They also did not invest some of their high draft picks on a successor. I remember Fisher talking about how Bradford was one of the reasons he took the job which may explain why they stuck with him so long. Failing to fix the QB problem is one of the major reasons they could never get over the hump. It also showed a lack of understanding how the league had changed and how critical that position was.
Fisher also had a coaching staff that was not good at developing talent. Today Snead/McVay know the types of players they want to profile and the coaching staff takes responsibility for developing the talent. Sure they might still miss on some draft picks but happens in every organization. Developing talent is a key tor their success as they often trade draft picks for proven talent and need to next man up to be someone who can contributed in a positive way.
I feel as Rams fans we are truly blessed to have the McVay/Snead team running the show. Every season a winning record and the playoffs 4 out of 5 years and we even got to a Super Bowl. Our Roster is filled with good players and we quickly adjust to overcome injuries. We have an organization that admits mistakes like the contracts for Gurley and Goff and bites the bullet taking the cap hit but with a plan to succeed.
Can we be better? Of course but who would you trust more the McVay/Snead to figure out how to get better and sustain the edge that they have already achieved?
