What a special guy Madden was. How in the world Al Davis picked Madden up from a Junior College thinking he'd be a great Pro coach I don't know. But Madden was so much more than a great coach. He was the epitome of all that's good about football. He was an innovator and a winner. Beloved by his players and fans. Larger than life.
What a great personality. He had a voice that instructed but wasn't over bearing. As an announcer he had a way of dissecting a play and explaining it that was part Einstein and part Seinfeld. There was a kind of warmth about him that was disarming.
Some guys are just set apart from all others in their field. IMO, in the history of the NFL, that is Lombardi and Madden. Those names will live as long as the NFL lives.
So sorry that he is gone. So glad to have been around to enjoy him.
