I think what you are discounting or not hearing is that players may feel a kinship or an attachment to a player who is not a good player-for a number of reasons such as a terrific member of the community, a family man, someone who gives of himself to charity or other fine qualities. They just might like the guy. So, IMO the emotional attachment can or should not be questioned with "I disagree with why". There are simply many "whys" in the equation.
As far as "All the picks it took to get him, the money it cost to re-sign him and all the picks it took to get rid of him "-are you blaming Goff for all that?. As far as that goes I've done some research and it turns out he had nothing to do with any of that. Moreover, do you think Goff intentionally didn't play well.
