Unfortunately, I fear that both Morris and DeCamillis are in over their heads so I don’t expect any miraculous improvement this week or probably the rest of the season. I consider both to be dead men walking. A couple of uncharacteristic bad hires last offseason.Sigh…
.
We've all been dumping on the special teams, me included. However, trying to look at it objectively, where is the coaching failing?
Gay: Having a great year.
Hekker: His leg is shot, was last year too. How is coaching supposed to help this? We kept the wrong guy based on Hekker re-doing his salary. That sounds more like a Demoff or Snead move than DeCamillis's call.
Punt coverage: We're giving up a 5.3 average with no TD's to date. Only 6 punts have been returned.
Kickoff coverage: We're giving up 23.9 average with no TD's to date. We had a couple of killer returns early on, but we seem to have made adjustments, which is what you expect of coaching. However, we could do better here.
Punt returns: Averaging 6.3 on 13 returns. Better than we're giving up.
Kickoff returns: Averaging 18.4. Okay, this really really stinks. But look at who we've given DeCamillis to work with: "Face plant" Atwell, and the "Time them with a sun dial" crew of Funk, Koski, Skowronek, & Howell.
So, to fall back on an old excuse: "Sometimes it's the players". I'm not sure Bones himself could do a whole lot better. (And just to be a jerk, the Cowboys are giving up more on both coverage units and averaging less on punt returns.)
