The Rams match routes, you cannot cover someone before the route "reveals" that is how match zone works--and if a QB throws on 1 step, the offense wins.
however, this scheme was #1 last year and is a top 10-12 or so defense this year.
I think people have unrealistic expectations. If the talent level is not as good as last year, it is not easy to be #1 again.
Lots of teams play this scheme, it is pretty common...and Rams play it better than most.
