He was SO Cherokee that he had family in NC and Oklahoma (Trail Of Tears). In the late 80s, they were questioning the name. If anyone would have griped, I thought he would have but it honestly did not bother him. Believe me, this guy was known for speaking his mind. He took it for what it was......A Football Team name. BUT....Back then, people had spines and sense of humor. He'd make jokes about scalping us when we were asleep. We'd make jokes like buying him a T shirt that read " Little Big Horn was rigged!!" ALL of us knew the truth of the past and we certainly did not let a FOOTBALL TEAM NAME fan any flames.
WITH THAT SAID........We agreed that IF there was a name that might offend, it was that. then we shrugged our shoulders and watched the game. But now, it has gotten crazy with people wanting to eliminate "Chiefs" and "Braves". HA! Even as a Gator, I get disgusted with people slamming the Seminoles of FSU. Hell, they honor the FIRST folks of the State of Florida. It certainly was NOT Ponce DeLeon!
