I still don't see the rationale behind these changes. The Indians clearly illustrates that it isn't about being offensive or even potentially offensive. It's about control. I find it very difficult to believe that any of these progressives that are pushing for the name changes will care about any particular group AFTER the name change.
But they are effectively pushing Indigenous people further into the background. Further outside the national consciousness by erasing all marketing related to them.
And, as questionable as Redskin may or may not be, I still have a hard time believing that any team owner would name his team after a racial slur, rather than because they actually like the name. But, even if Redskin qualifies as just too controversial, Indians can't possibly. Or Chiefs or Seminoles. People are not disparaging anyone by celebrating those names.
As others have pointed out, are the Vikings next? Or maybe the Fighting Irish? I mean, Notre Dame surely must be condescending the Irish by having a Leprechaun mascot, right? The Irish have a pretty persecuted history in America, don't they? Why won't someone protect them?
