First I agree with your subject t line.. What's obvious to me is McVay controls who goes off any particular week. When Kupp was going supernova weeks 1-3 lots of people were asking what's up with Bobby Trees? What I noticed was that on quite a few of those wide open Kupp catches, the voids in the coverage Coop exploited were because of Bobby's routes. Last game Kupp was the stalking horse that Bobby drafted to wide open catches. McVay's offense has routes that are dependent on each other. The secondary routes serve to open up the primary. Sometimes the defense can thwart that and the QB goes through progressions but if one particular WR goes off in a McVay game it isn't because he is necessarily better than another receiver but because he is being schemed to be the primary option. I personally might prefer he mix it up in game so it isn't obvious that this is a "Van game" per se but maybe this is a set up for the Niners down the line.
