Bell was a very good RB, IMO who played well vs tough teams (See 1989) Losing Pete Holohan took away a clutch 3rd down guy and IMO, killed Jim Everett's career. Had the Rams kept them for just another 2-3 years and focused on a younger D, who knows?? I bet the 1990s drought would NOT have been the nightmare it was.
While possible, I think the reality off the field was too much to overcome. The team didn't mysteriously erode, it was systematically dismantled.
Everett lost the team in the '89 Championship. They quit on him. When I saw Ellard short-arming passes and jogging routes, I knew that Everett was toast. He was out there trying to win them back and running the ball trying to make plays but to no avail. It was pretty rotten and coincided with Georgia gutting the team of talent and depth. You didn't trade a healthy, young QB like that unless something else was going on.
