Sean McVay wants to get DeSean Jackson involved more: 'He's too good of a player'

With very little spending money and several of their own starters set to hit free agency, the Los Angeles Rams weren’t very active on the market this offseason. They did bring in one player during free agency, however, when they signed DeSean Jackson to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million.

His contract has a max value of $6.25 million with incentives, but through two weeks, Jackson’s impact has been minimal. Against the Colts in Week 2, Jackson played just three snaps and didn’t receive a single target.

Sean McVay was asked about Jackson’s limited role and admitted he must be better about getting him involved on offense.

“I have to figure out a better way to get him involved. He’s too good of a player,” McVay said Monday. “We brought him here to impact and influence the game and that’s something that’s going to be reflected moving forward. Really, there’s nothing that DeSean didn’t do. I’ve got to figure out a better way of getting him involved in a rotation, so that he can affect and influence the outcome of the game and that’s what you’ll see moving forward.”

Getting Jackson involved is easier said than done. Yes, he’s a dynamic playmaker with elite speed, but the Rams also have three really good receivers in Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and Van Jefferson as their starters. With how infrequently the Rams have four receivers on the field, one of those starters will have to come off in order to get Jackson more playing time.

Kupp played all 59 snaps against the Colts, Woods played 58 and Jefferson played 54, so there wasn’t really a rotation at wideout. McVay even said of Woods that he wants to make sure he’s “doing a good job of trying to get him more opportunities,” so the room for Jackson to contribute is slim.

It would be wise for the Rams to spread things out a little more against the Buccaneers on Sunday, given their defensive front and ability to stop the run. We’ll see if McVay makes good on his word to get Jackson more opportunities, but there are only so many snaps and targets to go around.
