McVay didn’t want him here just for window dressing, I promise you that. DJ is a legit threat on every snap and D’s must honor that threat with Stafford throwing the ball or they will pay dearly.
Now, I do see Atwell getting increasing snaps this season as he develops. This will both rest DJ and prepare Atwell for a probable injury to DJ and for ‘22 when DJ will almost certainly be gone.
That, in a nutshell, was the strategy in drafting Atwell at 57. Now McVay has his speedy deep threat WR for Stafford both now and later.
