I think you are probably right. Teams like to resign their own free agents. There is a lot of information that a team sees day in and day out. Are you on time to meetings? Diet, weight, work out regime, trainer, chef, playbook, are you a pro? Scouting the draft gets pretty intense. I remember hearing former GM Charlie Casserly say that he would send a youthful looking scout (he specifically said one that looked like Daniel Jeremiah) to the campus bars to observe.
But the Rams are cutting some talented players who look like from our view as devout fans, are doing everything they can do. It looked like Trishton Jackson, Juju Hughes, Lawler did everything right and could contribute to the team. The same must be true on other teams player cuts. It must just be a bit more risky. But if you need a RB you have to give up the WR or S you know for a RB you don't know day to day. You hope it works out. The front office probably gets information from lots of sources. Dead Pool and alyoshamucci would probably the ones to ask about it.
